Projector Screen Size and Brightness Calculator
Answer four questions to see the screen size, brightness in lumens, projector placement, and sound we would recommend for your room. Results update as you type.
Your recommended setup
- Screen
- 8 ft wide tripod screen
- About 8 x 4.5 ft image (110 inch diagonal), 16:9
- Brightness
- 3,000 to 4,000 lumens
- ANSI lumens, for a dim room
- Projector placement
- 11 to 16 ft from the screen
- With a standard lens. A short throw projector can sit about 5 ft away.
- Farthest seat: 26 ft (estimated). Closest comfortable seat: about 12 ft from the screen.
- Room height: plan on about 9 ft of clear height so the bottom of the image clears the audience's heads.
- Sound: Add a powered speaker. Add a wireless microphone if someone will be speaking.
We will confirm the numbers against your actual room before anything ships.
How it works
The math behind the recommendation
Screen size. The calculator uses the 4-6-8 rule: the farthest viewer should sit no more than about 4 times the image height away for fine detail, 6 times for slides and charts, and 8 times for video. A 48 foot room showing slides needs an image about 8 feet tall, or roughly 14 feet wide at 16:9. It then rounds to a standard tripod, fast-fold, or outdoor screen size.
Brightness. Required lumens are the image area in square feet times a target screen brightness in foot-lamberts: about 25 for a dark room, 45 for dim, 75 with the lights on, and 110 with daylight. That result is increased by 30 percent for real-world conditions.
Placement. A standard lens sits about 1.4 to 2.0 times the image width from the screen. A short throw lens needs much less room. Learn more in our guides to how many lumens you need, screen size, and throw distance.
Calculator questions
How accurate is the projector calculator?
It uses the same rules of thumb AV technicians use for planning: the 4-6-8 viewing rule for screen size and a target screen brightness for each lighting condition. Real rooms vary, so treat the result as a strong starting point. We confirm the final setup against your actual room before your rental ships.
Why does the calculator recommend more lumens than the minimum?
The brightness range includes about 30 percent headroom for light from doors, windows, and stage lighting, and for the normal difference between a projector's rated and real-world output. A little extra brightness is the difference between an image that looks good and one that looks washed out.
What if my room has a low ceiling?
Raise the image as high as the ceiling allows and use a smaller screen, or split the audience between two screens. A short throw projector can also help in rooms where there is no good place for a projector stand.
Can I send my calculator results with a quote request?
Yes. The Get a Quote for This Setup button carries your audience size and recommended setup into the quote form, so our team can confirm the details and price the exact package.
