How LCD Technology Works
LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display. LCD Projectors display images through small metal halide lamps. These lamps produce a wide range of colors at ideal color hues. Also, these lamps enable a projector to emit large amounts of light (on average 2,000 to 15,000 Lumens) in a small area. The light from the lamp is dispersed through a series of dichroic filters (liquid crystals) to three panels, one for each color component of a video signal (red, green, blue). An electrical current is applied to toggle the color on or off, depending on what shade of what color is being displayed. This gives the LCD projector its wide color range.
Improvements in LCD Technology
There have been several problems with LCD projectors since they were first manufactured. The biggest problem is motion blur, which has been a major flaw of this type of technology. This is where an image will remain on the screen after it has changed, causing a blurred picture. LCD projectors were notorious for having poor color saturation and low contrast ratios. These problems have have been improved upon in LCD technology.
Best Applications for LCD
LCD Projectors are most ideal for static images like spread sheets and documents. As long as there is little movement on the screen, the drawbacks of LCD technology go unnoticed. When projecting static images, you get sharper images with less blur because of the high levels of light produced by the projector.
LCD Projectors also work great in areas where it is difficult to control the lighting in the room, such as rooms with several large windows. Since the metal halide lamps produce bright light, they perform better in these scenarios. Typically LCD projectors have a larger viewing angle as well, which is good for large rooms with several viewers that are not centered in front of the projector.
